Don’t Take Chances With Fish Diseases

Coldwater fish (those that live in temperate waters 4-28oC) can make a wonderful addition to your garden pond. But knowing where to buy healthy stock is a challenge to most people.

Choose the right species

Common additions to UK ponds are members of the carp family such as  Goldfish (Carassius auratus) auratus, Shubunkins, common and mirror carp, and colourful Koi (derived from the Japanese ‘Koi’ meaning carp). Native British coldwater fish that also make good additions are Tench, both green (native strain), and golden (ornamental strain) and the shy Crucian carp  (Carassius carassius)  Golden and Blue Orfe descended from the European Ide (Leuciscus idus) may also make ideal attractive additions.

At Ponfishdirect.com we own our own fish farm, with 14 ponds covering some 3 acres in Norfolk. Koi pondWe have been growers and suppliers to the wholesale and retail trade for 15 years, but recently we have become more and more concerned about the mixing of our healthy native stocks with imported ‘trade fish’: So this year  we have decided to offer our home-grown fish directly to you, our customers.

What’s more, you can buy them on this website and have them delivered safely and securely direct to your door. Whether you are a pond owner, or retail outlet you can be assured that our fish have had only one home before yourselves.

Recent diseases

The most recent and most deadly threats from imported fish are Koi herpes Virus (KHV) and Spring Viremia of carp (SVC). Both are viral agents that are extremely difficult to detect in fish until stress or temperature ‘triggers’ the disease to the acute stage. Our fish are regularly health tested by CEFAS and DEFRA listed fish health experts and are guaranteed to be KHV and SVC free. For both of these diseases there are no treatments, and mortalities are usually up to 100% of all carp within your pond.
